Free-bet returns: the missing stake changes the calculation

A free bet and a cash bet can show the same nominal stake and decimal odds while returning different amounts when they win. The reason is often whether the stake itself is returned. That condition belongs beside the headline reward rather than being buried after a payout comparison.

Use a hypothetical stake of ten units at decimal odds of 3.00. A winning cash bet normally returns thirty in the simple model: twenty profit plus the original ten stake. A stake-not-returned free bet instead returns twenty. Multiplying the nominal free-bet amount by three without subtracting the unreturned stake would overstate that modelled payout.

A stake-returned free-bet product would require a different interpretation, so the actual campaign terms are essential. The words free bet do not establish the model on their own. Neither calculation proves that any particular operator currently offers the reward, that an account qualifies or that the selected market is permitted.

Minimum odds can impose another restriction. A campaign might specify which selections qualify or exclude particular market types. Expiry, maximum reward and settlement rules after a void can also matter. These conditions should be kept as distinct fields rather than reduced to a single promotional percentage.

The source currency and country must remain attached to the offer. A ten-unit example is deliberately currency-neutral. It should not be converted into a local welcome promise simply because the same bookmaker brand appears on a country page. Historical offers need a source date and a current review before being presented as active.

Payment conditions are separate again. A qualifying deposit threshold may determine how a free bet is earned, but it is not the ordinary account deposit minimum. A reward being credited does not automatically establish that it is withdrawable or that winnings have no further conditions. Read the account and promotion rules together.

For a clear comparison, show nominal reward, stake-return rule, eligible odds and markets, expiry, winnings treatment and country scope. Explain the arithmetic with a labelled example, then state which terms are actually recorded. That gives a reader a useful way to understand the reward without presenting the largest possible multiplication as guaranteed cash or evidence of a risk-free wager.
